Less than one week away. We hope the the weekend will be half as nice as it was this past weekend.
I heard there was a prerace this past Saturday from H to #3. It sounded like it was a good time. I also heard that a couple of boats did the whole trip as a prerace scouting thing. Or maybe not. Now for the Pre Bluenose Party at the dock Friday night. Sounds like the a great time and let the smack talk, side bets and party begin. Any participant or non participate is welcome to join the PreParty. Bring an appetizer to share and something to drink up to the gazebo around 6 pm or whenever you can get there. We can also fire up the grill if anyone needs it. Laura and Steve Twyman The original Bluenose was launched as a Grand Banks fishing and racing schooner on March 26, 1921 in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia. The builders who crafted the sleek vessel had something to prove. Their sights were set on the International Fishermen’s Race. For the working fishing schooner speed was an asset. Those who made it to port first received the best price for their catch. The Fishermen’s Race was a real race for the hard working vessels of fisherman who made their living on the sea.
Nova Scotia’s pride and shipbuilding reputation sailed the Bluenose. The Bluenose took her first trophy in October 1921 and as they say the legend began. During the next 17 years, no challenger could beat the Bluenose. It earned the title “Queen of the North Atlantic” and became a Canadian icon. Bluenose became to symbolize Nova Scotia’s shipbuilding industry. In 1933 it appeared at the World’s Fair in Chicago and sailed to England in 1935 for the Silver Jubilee of King George V. On January 28 1946 the Bluenose struck a reef off of Haiti and was loss. In 1963 the Bluenose II was launched. It was built by many of the same people who had worked on the original vessel at the same shipyard in Lunenburg. It continues to serve as the sailing ambassador for Nova Scotia. The image of the Bluenosehas adorned the Canadian dime since 1937, three postage stamps and on the Nova Scotia license plate. The historic vessel is a living reminder of the glorious sailing era. Steve All Attached are the rules and course information for the upcoming Bluenose Race on Sept 29, 2012. As of today we have 10 or 11 boats that have committed to the race. I have the start times set for each of these boats. If anyone else out there is interested in racing their boat please let me know this week. Once I have all the boats I will send out the start times. Also if you are interested in crewing please let everyone know. As of now I know Thanos and Helen are looking for boats to crew on. If you already have your crew lined up please let me know who they are so I can keep track of who is on what boat. Steve I just wanted to give a quick update on the upcoming Bluenose Race on Sept 29th. As of yesterday we have 10 boats committed and 1 maybe to the race.
They are in no particular order: Unplugged Rosebud Seahawk Tenacious Honeycraft Querida Odyssey Loblolly M&M Journey Aquila (maybe) This is so awsome. I was not sure how it would go over once everyone heard about this FUN race. A special Bluenose Trophy will be awarded for 1st place and trophies awarded for the 2nd and 3rd place winners. For all who have already committed please send me the names of your crew if you already have them lined up. If you want to race your boat please let me know your information. If you would just like to crew let me know that also and we will find a boat for you to crew on. Stay tuned for more updates and race layout and rules. Laura and Steve Twyman Ok sailors, it time for another Fun Race.
We will meet for race committee meeting Saturday morning at 10:30. We will call Saturday's race "The Dirty Sailor's Race." The format follows the dirty Santa we have played with Christmas gifts at office parties in the past. We will just use crew as presents. The crew will keep changing until the last draw. So bring your full crew and hope no one steal's one. If you have any questions feel free to call me. (919-880-0093) Let's get everyone out and have some fun. See you Saturday . Hi sailors,
The Steele Creek Yacht Club, will try again to hold our first club race this Saturday, April 14th. As mentioned in the March Madness racing letter, we will be trying a new racing format this year with a focus to encourage participation. Most of the events will be fun races. Each race during the year will have its own format therefore each race will stand on its own. Fun race winners will receive a trophy and bragging rights to keep until the next race when it is passed on to the next winner. Saturday's race will be called, Who's My Crew. We will mix up skippers and crew at the race committee meeting to be held at the gazebo at 10:30. If you'd like to race your boat and be one of the skippers, be prepared to volunteer at the meeting. Everyone else will put their names in a hat and the skippers will draw for crew. I will oversee the drawing to ensure that seasoned racers are mixed with novices. (I reserve the right to make some skippers draw again to get the balance we need.) If the weather is goodt, we will have two races. The winners will have the lowest combined time after the PHRF adjustment. We are hoping for a good turnout Saturday. If you have any question please give me a call at 919-880-0093. Our club will have a campfire at the moorings after the races so the winners will have plenty of time to tell all us losers just how good they really were. See you Saturday, Eddie Hello Racers,
Races 7 & 8 of our Fall 2011 Series will take place this Saturday and will bring an end to the series and the racing year. The race committee meeting will be on Dock C at 10:30 am. with racing to begin around noon. Thanks to all club members that helped in making this a successful and safe year of racing. Special thanks to Ted Tlsty, Jeff Matthiae and Meryl Alexander for doing race committee this series. Race 5&6 Recap: Aquila, race committee boat, refused to leave the slip, so M&M came to the rescue. Ted can give you the funny details. As everyone headed to the race course, we were reading 15 to 20 knots of wind, with gusts in the mid-20's. The first race was an olympic course. Once all boats checked in, the count down started. With the wind building, all boats were on the starting line together. Tenacious won the start with the fleet right on her tail. With boats giving each other bad air, the fleet split soon after the start. Tenacious got to the windward mark first with Journey close behind. On legs 2 and 3 we saw steady wind with all boats sailing close together. Leg 4 brought lots of action for Tenacious. After rounding the bottom mark, Tenacious hardened up on a port tack and headed toward the east side of the lake. After tacking onto starboard, Mark Alexander saw that the outer stays had come off the spreader. We pulled the sails down in seconds and were no longer in trouble. Journey came by and offered help. If Mark had not seen the problem, Tenacious would have lost her mast. He definitely earned the title, "crew of the day." With Tenacious out of the race and heading back in, both Hunter 30s were locked in a tacking duel. Journey won line honors (first boat to finish) while Ron and crew won the race. The second race was shortened to a triangle course. The wind was still in the upper teens. Brenda Gail brought in some hot shot crew from the bay to race with him and won the start at top speed. Rocket Ron, on Honeycraft, was sailing smart for the day and after a couple legs took the lead form Brenda Gail. Journey finished with line honors once again with Honeycraft stealing the glory with wins in both races. Great racing, Honeycraft. View the results at https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AklpZDH_cwvedGJlNFRrdzBmWWd3NkdlRXpUZU9XWEE. With only 2 races left, we have 4 boats still fighting for the silver. If you have any questions feel free to give me a call (919-880-0093 ) I will get to the lake by Friday afternoon if anyone need some help getting their boat ready for Saturday Trim them sails, Eddie It’s race time, fellow sailors.
