First we would like to welcome our new members to the
club.  Greg and Gayle Campbell (new owners of Pronto) on C Dock and Darren and Sigal Wohl (no true name as of yet) on A dock.  I hope you were able to meet them as they were at the Fish Fry

Friday night was great to sit outside and enjoy the cooler weather and the company of many on the dock.  Fall is in the air.

Saturday saw a lot of people coming up to enjoy the great weather.  Several boats went out for a nice sail while others did a little fishing, a little boat cleaning, and some afternoon snoozes.  That evening we had yet again a very successful Fish Fry hosted by Don Courtney.  A BIG thank you to Don, Dave, Paul and Rich for cooking up some great fish, fries, corn fritters and hushpuppies and all that helped set up and break down.
Also thanks to the 55 of you that came and shared all your great side dishes, soup and desserts.  After the great meal the night was still young so many of us hung out on the dock talking and laughing and saying how full we were!!!!

Sunday started off nice and cool with the fog coming off
the water and the sun coming up in the sky.  This is some of the best time of the morning.

September 21-22 Weekend, Bluenose results

9/23/2013

All

This coming weekend is the Annual Fish Fry.  If you plan on coming please respond to the Evite that was sent out last week. We need a head count for food purchase and the long range forecast looks great.

This past weekend was the BillyTees Bluenose Race 2013.  This week I will be entering all the information that was collected over the race and will have it ready for next weekend.  This race is a story in itself but there are stories within the story.  Such as parts of motors falling overboard, going into irons at the start, running aground, going around the mark twice, having wind speed of . . ., not giving up and so many more.

Laura and I personally want to thank each and every one
of you that participated in this race.  My dad, Bill, had a great time watching all the racing and had good laughs at the smack talk and talked about the original days of the race.  We are honored that you all participated and were determined to finish the race no matter what time it was.

Below are some of the highlights of the race.
45 total mile race
12 boats started the race, 1st boat off at 9 am
9 boats finished the race, last boat came across at 11:24 pm
1st place = Eddie on Tenacious total time of 7 hrs 14 minutes plus he did this race single handed!!!!!!
2nd place = Gerd and Tim on Rosebud total time of 7 hrs
46 minutes
3rd place = Christian and Marcelo on Journey total time 8 hrs 10 minutes
wind speed at the start was around 7 to 7.5
wind at 1 pm was 7 to 11
wind at 4 pm was 9.5
wind at 5 pm was 9
rain showers started around 6:30 pm with some strong
gusts and light winds and were a hit and miss until the end of the race

Overall the winds held for most of the day unlike last
year and made this race about 3 hrs faster than last year.

There were around 500 pics taken during the race and will try and get some posted on the site and the steele creek fb page for everyone to see.

Hope to see you all next week at the Fish Fry

Upcoming events
Sept 28th = Fish Fry
Oct 5th = Fun Race
Oct 12th = Annapolis Boat Show
Oct 19th = Hot Dog Race
Oct 26th = Halloween Party

September 4 Weekend in Review

All

First of all we would like to welcome Keith and Wanda
Smoot to the club.  They are located in slip C28.

What a wonderful weekend it turned out to be.  It felt like a bit of fall in the air and by the calendar Fall begins next Sunday along with a full moon.  You could also notice some leaves around the lake are starting to turn colors.

Friday saw a few people come up for the day and enjoyed some sailing and cleaning of boats.  It is always a fun evening catching up with friend and sharing in some good times.

Saturday was a work day on the boats for some and others went out for a bit of a sail.  Once again a few boats were out doing prep work for the upcoming Bluenose race.  Clean bottoms help pick up that extra knot of speed.  Once the sun went down you could feel the cool air blowing in and everyone around the dock started to put on warmer cloths.  After dinners were done a small group headed down to hang out on Palisades for a drink before a movie.  I am not sure if the
movie ever happened.  A fun time was had by all.

Sunday was another beautiful day to be on the lake. With the fog rising off the warm water and the bright sun coming up over the  trees with a cup of coffee in hand I had to say I did not want to be anywhere else.  As my good friend always says Simple Pleasures.

Bluenose Race
As of this morning we have 15 boat starting the fun
race.  The three new entries are Hideaway, Stargazer and Islander.  If you are interested in entering your sailboat into the race please let me know by Tuesday evening.  I will send out the rules and start times to each boat that is participating in a separate email Wednesday morning. Even if you do not plan on participating come on out and see the start of the race, 1st boats are off at 9 am, or just follow along with them on part of their journey.

Bluenose PreParty for ALL CLUB MEMBERS
The race preparty will be held Friday evening at the gazebo starting around 6:30 ish until. This is a preparty for all club members no matter if you are racing or not.  We ask that you bring an appetizer to share and whatever you prefer to drink.  Laura will be making a cake as this is now tradition for this race.  If this year is
anything like last a good amount of smack talk will be done, some last minute strategies and some additions of burlap sacks to some boat keels.  I have already seen that a few boats started this past weekend.

Enjoy your week.

Labor Day Wrap-up

9/3/2013

I hope everyone had a great Labor Day weekend.

A few words to describe the weekend are great sailing,
pizza, new anchorage, stuck and broken anchors and an easy raft up Saturday a few boats headed to Clarksville and had a great sail the entire way there.  Several other boats did not go all the way but went to the power lines or to the dam and back all said they had great wind.  A group of 16 showed up at the pizza pub for dinner and had a great time after having a great day on the water.  That evening several of us just hung out at the dock for a bit getting caught up on the events of the day.

Sunday started of warm and muggy.  Several boat
headed up the lake to explore some new anchorages with the boats coming back down from Clarksville meeting in the middle around Eastland Creek.  It was
a fun afternoon hanging out in the water and enjoying some snacks.  In the late afternoon a storm started to blow in.  We got a good amount of rain and wind (24 to 27 knots) from the storm and we all hoped that the anchors would hold and they did.  If you have FB look for the video that Mark posted of Laura, myself and Jeff trying to paddle back to our boat in the wind.  Needless to say we did not go anywhere but backwards and listening to Mark laugh just made it even more funny.  Once the wind died down we were finally able to make it back to the boat.  Once the storm cleared out the stars were bright and what a great breeze for sleeping with the hatches open.

Monday morning started off great as I was up early and
was going to head out fishing for a few hrs.  Well at some point during the storm our anchor line got hooked around a tree or something.  With the Great help from Meryl and Laura we were able to finally get the anchor up.  A bit of advice, we always use a trip line on the anchor just for times like this.  I was able to pull the anchor itself up using the trip line which was our saving grace this time.  Once we had the anchor attached to the
boat Meryl and I were able to unhook the chain from the anchor and pull the rope and chain up from whatever it was snagged on.  Again a big Thank You to Meryl for all your help.  Thanks to all the others also that stayed around in case more help was needed.  Later that afternoon we also found out another boat had their anchor stuck on something and bend the shank.  You
just never know what is down there that can cause issues with your anchor.

Once that fun 2 hour anchor hall was over we all started heading back toward the marina.  During the trip it was decided to anchor closer to the marina and have lunch and swim for the afternoon.  Several boats came and created a small raft up and we all enjoyed the good fun
and laughs.  There were even several boats that did some bottom cleaning over the weekend in preparation for the upcoming Bluenose race.  Around 4pm everyone started to head back in as it was coming to a time for the long weekend to end.

The End of Summer????  Well per the calendar yes but we hope to squeeze out a few more nice weekends to enjoy swimming for this year.
