Castaway Weekend write up and next Event THE LUAU

Hi Everyone,

What a weekend.  Friday night was Docktails.  We had about 12 people come over to C-Dock and partake in White Russians, Rum and Coke and Blueberry Stoli drink.  There was a nice breeze so it was great sitting outside.  We found the mystery people who met up with our friend at Best Buy last month.  It was Jim & Lynn from Blues Cruze.

On Saturday it started out raining.  Our weather watchers were looking at Weather bug and looking at bands of rain coming our way.  We would have rain then breaks.  Most people did some type of project or watched movies.  By 1 PM we went to plan B for Castaway.  We decided to have the Taco dinner up at the Gazebo and postpone the treasure hunt for the Luau.  By 2:30 the skies started to clear.  Several people went out for a sail.  One boat that I did not see was Sandy Cheeks.  We radioed them but did not have a response.  The boats on the lake did not see them.  I was concerned that they would be at Gilligan’s Island and no one would be there so I jumped on Lil’ Cheese (jetski) and headed out in search of them.  I found them about 2 tacks away from Gilligan’s Island. They looked like they were having a good sail anyway.  They were laughing when they saw me approach on the jetski.   I told Tim & Carolyn that there was a change in the plans due to the weather.  We met up at the Gazebo at 6 PM with the food we had.  We had 25 people show up for dinner.  It was pleasant and the skies continued to clear.  We had beef and shrimp tacos with all the fixings and side dishes of 7 layer bean dip, refried beans and yellow rice. The crew of Sandy Cheeks made it back with the chicken taco mix.   We had black and white cookies for dessert.  A good time was had by all.

At 8 PM, several boats decided to do an evening sail.  It was a full moon out and nice breeze and great temperature.  Tenacious had 11 people onboard for a sail, Unplugged had 3 and Namaste was alone.  Unplugged had a head start.  We were doing 6 knots on an upwind run to the dam.  Unplugged had 2 crew members in the water for a swim near Great island as Tenacious approached.  The water probably felt good but getting out would be a chill.  Several of us were reaching for jackets or going inside to seek cover from the wind.  Actually got a little chilly.  (didn’t think I would say those words yet).   Eddie even let several crew take a turn at the helm.  It was so bright out.  We got back to the dock at 11:30.  Thanks Eddie for a wonderful night sail.  On Sunday, it turned out to be a great day.  Blue skies and light breeze.  We had 11 boats head out and sail in the area of Satterwhite, Hibernia, UNC and lower Henderson Pt.  just sailing back and forth.  We had winds up to 7 knots.  By 3 PM boats started to head back to the marina.  We stopped and drifted for a little and jumped into the water.  We had a great time.  I would also like to give a SCYC farewell to one of our members as they move on to bigger waters at the coast.  We wish them smooth sailing and great adventures.

Our next event is in 2 weeks the Luau.  The Luau will be held on Saturday August 27th at the Henderson Point State Park Group Camping.  It is a great opportunity for you to invite friends and family and they can camp at the campground for free.  We have the site from Friday thru Sunday.  The State Park does not allow alcohol so bottles of beer need to be hidden.  The park also locks the gate at 9 PM so you cannot leave after that time.  The event will start at 1 PM on Saturday.  You can sail over and anchor and spend the night.  The club will provide Barbeque Chicken, Old Bay Shrimp, Corn on the Cob, Potatoes and Hot Dogs for the kids.  (adult guests will be charged $5 per person for food).  Everyone will need to bring either an appetizer, side dish or dessert and bring your own drink.  We will have volleyball set up and we will do the Treasure Hunt on the beach (postponed from Castaway Weekend).  We will need people to meet me at the shed on Friday afternoon August 26th at 3 PM to get everything we need and drive it over to the campsite and set it up.  We will need to know if anyone will be staying overnight at the campground to watch over things.  We will need volunteers to help cook,, set up, clean up, return items to the shed etc.  Also if anyone has beach games like bean bag toss, ladder toss or horseshoes please let me know.  We will need responses by next Wed August 24th so that we buy enough food for everyone.  Looking forward to this great event.
